Light and Easy to Use but Still Secure
I replaced a medium sized ball head with this head, and I really like it. While the ball head was useful when switching between using a camera with an L plate and shorter lens and using a long lens with a footed collar, I think that the panning head, combined with a leveling base makes panoramas far easier and it's also easier to use in a gimbal fashion with long lenses.

Well buit, but no long-lens head
The head works fine. Smooth and precise vertical controls. The possibility to change direction for the clamp is very welcome and works well. For an ordinary camera everything is fine, but it is not well suited for a long lens like a 400/2,8. The head is just too small and the setup becomes shaky and difficult to use even when the tripod itself is very sturdy. The horizontal direction is in my opinion also not optimal. It is difficult to have the knob loose without becoming so loose that when you fasten it the composition will jump, and you need to readjust with the vertical controls to get it precisely where you want it.

The tripod head I've been waiting for
I'm not a professional photographer so my full attention needs to be directed towards my camera settings and my composition. My first outing with the Acratech Panoramic Head was a joy. For once I didn't spend most of my time messing with my tripod. Not only is the design brilliant but the fit and feel of the knobs and dials is so nice. I'm seriously trying to think of an excuse to upgrade my other two cheaper tripods to Acratech ballheads! Thanks you for such a wonderful product!

Acratech Panoramic Head vs. Fluid Head
I have been using a fluid head mounted on a leveling base instead of a ballhead for my wildlife and landscape photos for some time now and have found it to be a great solution. However, the fluid head is large and bulky. The Acratech pano head gives me the same functionality in a much smaller package. It is extremely well engineered and well made, like all Acratech produces and I would recommend it to any photographer who struggles with a traditional ballhead.

Acratech Panorammic Head Better than A Ballhead
I have the RRS TFC-34 MK2 Tripod which I like, but I did not like using the RRS BH-40 LR II ballhead. I saw Thomas Heaton's video and started researching this product. Because my tripod does not allow for a bowl type solution I also needed a leveling base (1170) for this to work. I can say that this setup, for me, is a superior solution. I had screwed up a Milky Way Shot and some shots of ships on the water due to an inability to pan with the RRS ballhead. I now no longer have that problem. I also am using the Acratech Nodal Rail 1135 which works well.
