I am a professional landscape photographer and have been using the Ultimate Ballhead for several years. I use it on almost a daily basis and have given it a lot abuse out in the mountains. I use it in the rain, snow, sand, etc and it has performed flawlessly. The ballhead is beautifully designed and incredibly strong. Their customer service is very personal and amongst the best I've ever worked with. I would readily buy another one again!

I have had this ballhead for years and it still works like the day I got it. I have bought and sold thousands of dollars worth of camera equipment, but never for a moment have I thought about selling this. Highly recommended!

I had the Ultimate Ballhead for 2 years now. It's been mounted on my Gitzo 5530s since the day it arrived at my door. I'm soon going to get the new long lens unit, due to the fact I've been shoot a lot more 400mm plus stuff. This head has worked very well, but if this new LL unit is built for these lenses then it'd gotta be the best in my book. I've tried some really fancy ball heads and they are great, but arcatech makes a simple product that will out last and out preform whats out there.

Having been a photographer for over 40 years and been through a lot of different heads for tripods, I can honestly say that the Acratech Ultimate Ball Head is the best so far. Should be more widely available and better known here in the UK.

Having used this head for two years now, I feel that I can give an un-biased review, unlike some who seem to be reviewing it the day after they bought it!
Sturdy (up to and including a Canon 100-400mm), but I wouldn't place to much faith in it with anything over 300mm f/2.8 size. Mine tends to creep downhill with this particular lens mounted at any angle but straight ahead. That said, it's a darn site more reliable in this area than the GV2 which I sold recently because I plain couldn't trust it.
As beautifully built as it is, I would class the Ultimate alongside the best Velbons, Sliks etc; not quite RRS class yet.

I'm a professional nature and adventure photographer in Moab, Utah. After five years of hard use, my Acratech Ultimate Ballhead is still going strong. I've never cleaned it. I beat the snot out of it hiking through slot canyons, dropping my pack on slickrock and snagging it on tree limbs while bushwhacking through the forest. Not once in five years has my Ultimate Ballhead failed me.

The knobs are easy to operate with or without gloved hands. Once locked down tight, the ballhead doesn't budge - even when holding a Canon pro body and 100-400mm lens. The clamp mechanism is solid. The open ballhead moves fluidly in even the worst conditions.

My only real complaint? The main knob is bigger than the other two. This is good. The other two knobs are of the same size. One controls the horizontal panning action while the other releases the QR clamp. I've had a couple "uh-oh" moments when I started loosening the wrong knob only to realize that my camera was milliseconds away from going skydiving.

All considered, I think Acratech makes the best ballhead on the market for outdoor photographers. I frequently recommend Acratech to my workshop and guided clients, several of whom have purchased one on my recommendation. I've never had one tell me they regretted the purchase.
