The Ultimate Ball-Head is the choice of macro photographers who want a Ball-Head that has all of its range of motion at the front. Some photographers will use the Ultimate Ball-Head for general photography but, our other Ball-Heads are preferred because of their range of motion.
The difference between the Ultimate Ball-Head and other Ball=Heads is the angle of the clamps that hold the ball. The Ultimate Ball Head clamps are at a 45-degree angle and other Ball Heads they are horizontal. The angle of the ball clamps affects the range of motion
You can also rotate the Ultimate Ball-Head 180 degrees and then the range of motion is from forwards to straight up which is excellent for night sky photography.
All Acratech Ball-Heads are designed to be lightweight and rugged for the active outdoor photographer. The open structure lets moisture, dirt and debris fall through instead of being trapped inside a socket.
Available with our Arca Swiss style, knob or locking lever quick release clamp.
Camera quick release plates sold separately. Find your camera or lens plate.

Amazing for Astro
This ball head is a great option for tracked astro. My star tracker with no counter weight desires a ball head attached strait to the tracker itself... at 26 degrees (low latitude). This "macro" ballhead allows me to operate at a much better angle then a traditional ball head (even one with a vertical notch) making this substantially more versatile then a traditional ball head for this use case. Amazing construction, light weight, and rock solid hold..... Pretty sure this is the last ball head I'll be buying... ever.

Great Companion for Astrophotography
I have one of the small, inexpensive, star trackers, and I tried many different ball heads and angle plates to try and easily orient my camera to different directions near the horizon over the course of the night. The Ultimate's 45 degree offset makes this VERY easy, and it is a much studier setup than using the angle plates to level a regular ball head. I also really like the locking lever release.

my 2nd and last ballhead
I should have heeded the advice of more experienced photographers who say get the best equipment first time out and you will not be throwing money away trying to replace it with something better. Yes, I did just that. The head is versatile and moves easily from horizontal to vertical or visa versa. The positions hold rightly yet It's easy enough to reposition. You will be very well served by this ballhead.
